Can HGH Make You Taller?
12.05.2021
by: Jorge Coronel Sanz

HGH is one of the most powerful anabolic hormones in the human body. It’s no wonder that the synthetic version is so popular for everything from anti-aging, to cosmetic, to bodybuilding purposes. Since 2016, when certain Hollywood celebrities declared HGH the “fountain of youth”, its popularity has soared. Of course, it has been used in bodybuilding for decades. With all of this power and popularity, the question that needs to be asked is, can HGH make you taller? This article will dive into this topic and give you the answer to that question.

What Is HGH?

As we have done in many of these articles, we will touch briefly on what HGH is:

  • HGH is a protein hormone that is produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland and consists of 191 amino acids
  • Natural HGH is released every few hours with up to 70% released at night
  • HGH attaches to receptors on the surface of liver cells, which stimulates these cells to release the hormone IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor-1)
  • IGF-1 is responsible for many of the effects of HGH
  • Natural HGH levels begin to decline as early as our 20s and steadily declines from there
  • Synthetic, or recombinant HGH is made in a lab and is identical to natural HGH.

What Determines How Tall You Are?

One of the major contributors to height is your genetics. Of course, it’s important to practice good posture and eat a balanced diet that’s high in the nutrients that contribute to bone health. It’s said that about 60-80% of your height potential is determined by genetics, while the remaining 20-40% is environmental, which includes proper nutrition. (1, 2, 3)

How Does HGH Relate To Your Height?

Children that have abnormally short stature often suffer from a deficiency of HGH. Some children might have genetic disorders, such as Prader-Willi Syndrome, or Turner’s Syndrome. These disorders appear to affect the development of girls exclusively. In addition to low levels of HGH, these disorders can cause additional problems such as poor eyesight, the feeling of being constantly hungry, a decrease in sex hormones, and decreased muscle mass. Once these individuals become adults, Turner’s and Prader-Willi Syndrome patients can have problems with their ovaries or kidneys, along with bone problems such as osteoporosis. However, of these disorders, the most common diagnosis for children is Human Growth Hormone Deficiency. Individuals with this deficiency have extremely low levels of HGH, which could lead to an average growth rate of two inches or less per year between the age of two and puberty.

Adults with HGH deficiency can suffer from general health problems such as muscle loss, increased fat gain, reduced mental focus, and a reduced sex drive. Additionally, these adults may experience a weakened immune system and increased vulnerability to problems such as high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart disease. We already know that HGH levels naturally decline as we begin to get older. Due to this process, adults may suffer from bone loss, which can lead to a loss of height.

How You Can Become Taller

HGH & Children

One of the purposes of synthetic HGH is for children with a deficiency. These children can receive treatment to increase their hormone levels, which will have an impact on their height as well as their overall health. However, and this is a key point, HGH treatments must be administered before they reach the age range when their growth plates close. Typically, this happens between the ages of 16 and 21. (4)

What Are The Options For Adults

As far as adults, it’s a little different. The most common treatment for adults being limb-lengthening surgery. Here’s a quick look at how this process works: This surgery typically requires a hospital stay of up to three days.

The first step is that the bone(s) that the client would like lengthened is either broken or cut.

Next, a device is put into place to begin distraction of the bone. This process basically means a slow stretching of the bone. The device can be an external fixator that’s attached to the bone with pins or screws. Or, it may be a metal rod that’s implanted in the bone in addition to the fixator.

Either the fixator is turned or a small amount of pressure is applied to the limb with the implantable nails to slowly cause bone distraction. On average, the bone and tissue will pull at about a millimeter per day. This allows new bone to form, making it longer and thereby increasing height. Once the desired length has been reached, the consolidation phase of this process begins. During this time, the bone will heal and harden. If a metal rod or implantable devices have been used, the external fixator may be removed. However, with an external fixator alone, it can take up to a couple of months per centimeter of new bone for all treatment phases to be complete. The client will need regular X-rays and physical therapy throughout the process. Also, the patient may have to wear a cast immediately afterward to make sure that the bone is protected. While limb-lengthening surgery can increase height, the average increase is only two or three inches.

Exercise Treatment

It should be noted that for those clients that want to avoid synthetic HGH, another option is exercise treatment. According to proponents of this approach, regular stretching, hanging, resistance exercises, and anaerobic exercises can stimulate higher levels of HGH secretions. (Anaerobic exercises include basketball, swimming, and bicycling.) Some sources also claim that fast-paced high-intensity intermittent exercise can cause a spike in HGH levels. However, the bottom line is that there is not a lot of evidence that exercise treatments can increase height, even in conjunction with a healthy diet and lifestyle.

Can HGH Make You Taller?

We’ve seen that surgery is an extensive process, and exercise is not an effective treatment. So, what about HGH injections? Can HGH make you taller? Although HGH injections will not guarantee an increase in your height, they may make a slight difference.

Summary – The Bottom Line

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with the addition of HGH injections can help an individual look and feel younger and healthier, regardless of his or her age. The best answer is to use HGH injections to look and feel your absolute best. The bottom line is that while you may not be able to reach the height you’ve dreamed of, you can reach the body composition and younger appearance you’ve been longing for. HGH may not make you taller but they will make you better.
